I’m afraid I found it a bit pompous, Tom. He seemed to imply that these foolish Western leaders needed his clear-eyed vision and then the world would be a better place. I’ve just finished the excellent Sapiens by Yuval Hariri, and I thought that gave a much better set of explanations.
StephHill, I’ll try the Hariri. Yes: Gray has an often difficult attitude. I liked his discussion of the way that evil is overused as a reason for action in the world.
I guess I just wasn’t convinced by it. Inaction isn’t consequence-free either, and he doesn’t seem to acknowledge that.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the Hariri. He’s provocative and jolly even when talking about gloomy subjects. I don’t buy all he argues either, but I enjoyed the ride!
