The thing he didn’t say was that if Saudi starts to look vulnerable, expect a rapid rapprochement with Iran. The process already started last year when it became clear how important Iran would be fighting ISIS.
Iran and Saudi have been going head to head diplomatically, but this is largely a battle of regional supremacy rather than a fundamental and intractable Sunni-Shiite battle. Taking the lead in fighting ISIS is starting to bring Iran ever so slightly closer to the US (and Saudi). The US will continue to open its arms to Saudi, indeed will need to, if there is a threat to oil supply from Saudi Arabia.
