Gwulo: Old Hong Kong is a fantastic resource for shots of old Hong Kong. I even managed to find pictures of a hotel in Repulse Bay that DrA had lunch at the day before it was demolished.
In related news, here’s a shot of Happy Valley from the early 1930s. Hopefully we’ll soon be living on the hill just visible on the left, just above the race course. While the area is almost unrecognisable now, the most amazing for me is how much further back the coastline now is (there are useful markers to that effect throughout Wan Chai). I’m not sure even Times Square would have fitted on this coast.
As a child I lived overlooking the happy Valley racecourse in the 60’s. I have some pictures taken from our unit. It looks a lot different today though. As children we would go and feed the horses sugar lumps – I bet you can’t do that today. mt first school was at Victoria Barracks.
