Some great stuff this week:
- How a bad boss improves your career. I agree: dealing with people you find difficult has to be some of the best learning you get at work.
- Five things for entrepreneurs to remember. Scary. Except for the “treat your customers right” piece.
- How to destroy your business. Lessons for me? Advertising and referrals.
- Why do ideas succeed? Good summary of Seth Godin’s work.
- How Jigsaw works. For those who don’t know, Jigsaw is an online LinkedIn-style service that sounds like salesmen trading leads and has therefore attracted some approbation. It seems a pretty good idea to me; keep users honest by the points system and you might get a win-win.
- How to get a job in Silicon Valley. I like the stuff on CV / Resume.
Thanks for the link to my article about things entrepreneurs shouldn’t forget…although I’m curious — why do you think it’s “scary”?
Answer: I’m just starting off down the “being responsible for people” journey. I don’t fancy the couch at work option, and it is horrible to be directly responsible for having to tell people they don’t have a job any more, solely because business says so. Personally, I’m pretty straight with staff and customers - I’m there to help or shouldn’t be there at all.
I guess some people would have said exciting? I find it terrifying - like public speaking, I’m good at it, but get butterflies something rotten. I think that’s a sensible reaction by the way - a few nights when you can’t sleep mean you care about your business.
