I visited Suzhou in the early 1980s. Had a really great day visiting amazing Chinese gardens. I remember a very tall pagoda held together with rice glue but I must have missed this. My other memory is of the Chines taking endless black and white photographs, mainly of themselves, and getting them developed on the site.
Could all have been a dream of course.
