Nielsen on Twitter

Nice to see the thought processes in action: how to write a Tweet announcing new conferences.

New ways of thinking

A few Friday readings: why don’t we come up with truly new ways of solving issues that have been with us for ages?

Friends with books

Two very different ends of the spectrum: Hattie has a chidren’s book out and Tricky Dicky Happer has a lads book out. We’re taking mostly US literature in California, so these will have to wait a little.

Rain today

Shows you radar pictures of rain as it has happened just a little earlier in the day so you can have a predict yourself.

Psychological recession

As Jonny pointed out, there are some interesting mistakes in this article (was it Datamonitor or Datavision carrying out the research?). But “psychological recession”?! Just wait until interest rates start rising: that’ll get rid of any feelgood factor.

Visualisations

Great presentation of the restricted views across London, although I don’t see the one from Richmond Park to St Paul’s. Thanks to @mrchrisaddison for the link.

I also like this marimekko presentation of some large and relevant numbers. This could easily feel like a junk chart, but this time it works.

A personal bubble of WiFi

Now we are getting closer to always connected applications. All we need now is transparent switching between 3G and WiFi on the devices and we are sorted.

Management methodologies

There’s a brief primer on about any management methodology you might have come across. I wonder if we could plug each page into a bullshitometer to see whether any of them stand up to the simple English test?

Footie season

Good old mash.Occasionally I would catch the eye of a friend and we would communicatesilently our secret desire to talk about cooking or gardening, but thenthe moment would pass and I would say something unbelievablypredictable about Robin Van Persie and then he would pretend to have anopinion about it.

Fix WordPress file permissions

My WordPress install has occasional bursts when it can’t auto-upgrade plugins or itself. There has been an issue with image upload through ScribeFire as well. I’ve tried various things that haven’t worked. This is the first time that I’ve seen the different directory and file permissions argument, so gave it a go, and it does appear to be working. I haven’t had a WordPress or plugin upgrade since I did it, though, so still a work in progress. As well as the permissions, I chowned the files to be owned by my user account and grouped as nobody, so hopefully the server-created files are changeable as well.
