Choclate wine

Hmm. Sounds like a posh version of the Basque drink Calimocho which mixes red wine and coca cola.

The internet

I’m a lowercase person. Unlike Jonza.

Tilt and shift

How to do your own tilt-and-shift shots without the funky hardware.

Chelsea not London?

No, nothing about footie, I’m afraid. I found it interesting that Pepys was writing at a time when Chelsea was a trip out of London, that the Florentine’s sent a special poison to trial on a hen, a kitten and a dog (they survived, btw). Fascinating view into life at the time.

I don’t think I could read the diaries in one sitting, but this gradual unrolling through a blog is excellent.

Good Sherman

I like:

Business week on presentations

I’m glad I don’t have to do very many presentations any more: simplicity is so much work.

Stars for supplements

A fantastic Bad Science: vitamin pills (”supplements”) don’t stop you dying. I guess this doesn’t mean that they don’t make you feel better during your (potentially shortened) life? Anyhoo, I read the summary as being “don’t take vitamin pills - use the cash to go for a walk”.

Monday science

Insects use plants as phones, with subterranean ones communicating with those in the open air.

Local optimisation shows how road networks develop in cities and also biological transport networks.

Memphis Raggetts

A spam from OJ brought me the fun news that a Tom Raggett lives in Memphis, TN. Also, there’s a Mike in Beaufort, SC, a Carolyn (sic) in Nashville, TN. NB don’t sign up - the site is geared to emailing your whole email list. The directory is available from the bottom of the home page (I think it is their SEO technique).

Mud puddle

You have to watch the movie, but it is worth it. What on earth are we doing allowing people like this to be on TV? Probably the reason I won’t do ChoirWars.

Crazy beliefs

Lovely Bad Science. Made me laugh a lot.

Friday fun

The OGC has a new logo. It’s a cracker. Or is that crack one off? Another poor logo choice.

How to collaborate

More juice on how to build a collaborative workplace / how to know if you are likely to be able to.

Amazon’s cloud

Nice article describing Amazon’s computing cloud and what a major impact it could have on us.

Earth pictures

Lots of deltas in these beautiful Earth photos - for many of the photos I can’t tell what they are without reading the captions.

More on Twitter

Rock solid explanation of what Twitter is (with some other excellent subjects) and some useful tips for journalists (and others) who might want to use it.

PocketPC vibrate and ring

I’ve been hating the fact that I can only have vibrate OR ring on my otherwise blameless new phone (O2 XDA Orbit 2), and have just found a couple of tips on how to do so.

Final script at HKCU\ControlPanel\Sounds\RingTone0\Script is af1v1w1f1v1w1v0pr. Couple of flash and vibrates then a vibrate and ring. Let’s see if I notice more calls that way.

Duplicate post-its

Genius - what will the line extension gnomes think up next? Yes it is a carbon-copy plus removable post-it pad.

Priest missing on balloon flight

Thanks to Ben for the pointer - genius. As he said “not a title you read every day“.

A Roman Catholic priest who used 1,000 helium balloons to try to break a flying record has gone missing off the southern coast of Brazil

H2G2 v2

So there would have been a sequel to the Hitchhikers’ Guide game. I used to have to bump my mum off her old Amstrad (PCW-8256, I think) to play the game and only finished it by finding answers on an old bulletin board - well before the full-on internet. Fascinating reading about the internal struggles to get the game not launched.
