Forbes ASAP: The Tragedy Of The Commons. The solutions that resolve the problem of the digital commons are likely to be ingenious ways to collect money from consumers with little noticeable pain, and these should facilitate the operation of the Internet as a market for goods and services. Just don’t expect it to be free. We’re going to have to pay for some of the information on the net as we would on AOL or Sky. True, but not earth-shattering. 6:10:05 PM |

Joel responds. Joel responds to Gartner’s call for MS to rewrite IIS: “Gartner seems to suffer the common but moronic fallacy that new or ‘completely rewritten’ code is somehow less buggy than old code.” Too right. 12:28:41 PM |

SF Chronicle: “He was the California connection to Osama bin Laden’s fearsome terrorist organization — an architect of horrific acts of violence against his adopted country, even as he lived a quiet suburban lifestyle in Silicon Valley.” The question is when he committed to terrorism – the article doesn’t touch on this, but is still worth a read. 10:10:16 AM |

Dispatches from Afghanistan. Like Vietnam chronicler Michael Herr, Russian journalist Artyom Borovik captured the hallucinatory hell of war — but these days it’s Borovik’s account of Afghanistan that seems the most relevant. Good article – not sure about the new Salon ads – much too much like TV, and we know that even TV is suffering from ad drought right now. 10:04:30 AM |

Gartner Group Suggests Dumping IIS For Now. Interesting that Gartner and the like are starting to criticise MS. Maybe the monopoly is over, maybe not, but I don’t like the idea of having to spend over

Zaki Badawi: “The atrocity of September 11 is a violation of Islamic law and ethics. Neither the people who were killed or injured, nor the properties that were destroyed, qualified as legitimate targets in any system of law, especially Islamic law.”Good to hear. 9:37:24 AM |

Another theory…. Jane’s Foreign Report has an article with another theory on the people behind the attacks on the Pentagon and the WTC. The link, unfortunately, is the “Non-Subscriber Extract”, and is a Bowdlerized version of the complete article. But still fascinating – two new names to add to the list of potential suspects. To be honest, they sound more likely than OB-L. 9:35:24 AM |

Surgeons Here, Patient There. Doctors in New York have successfully removed the gall bladder from a woman in France, using a remote-controlled robot. Imagine if the recipient was in the US – the law suits! This is vital news: it means you can invest heavily in medical kit that can be fully used, even if you don’t have patients in your region or even your country. 9:34:44 AM |

uiweb: The myth of optimal web design. Whether you are designing an intranet web site, or a microwave oven, you have at least three sets of overlapping criteria to deal with: Business objectives, user experience objectives, and resource limitations. These aspects create lines of both synergy and tension. 5:38:30 PM |

Web Review: Lessig Slams Bovine Culture of Complacency. Lessig on form again talking about the SoCal “plantation” ideology of content (e.g. you pay me to use my content) and the NorCal “embrace/transmute/extend” idea of content/culture/technology (e.g. change it as you like). 12:46:09 PM |
